ARP Odyssey – What a monster!

video upload by Marius Leicht

"I recently got my beloved ARP Odyssey back from restoration after more than two years! But it was so worth the wait.

The Oddy (pun intended) can be a bit intimidating at first glance: No pitch and modwheels, sliders instead of knobs, a bit of a quirky layout... combined with its surprisingly complex modulation capabilities, this puts the ambitious synthesist on the quest for the "taming of the unruly".

After spending some quality time with this now fully restored beauty, I get in touch with her soul deeper and deeper and I just performed a little improvised sound meditation, pushing the amazing 4023 filter of this rare whiteface mk I to places where no Behringer clone will ever go... ;-)

It touches my heart how she sings and dances with the Juno! Let me know what these sounds evoke in you!"

Mellotron M400

video upload by Marius Leicht

"I was in love with the quirky, yet hauntingly beautiful sound of the Mellotron since the first time I heard one (the obvious first encounter was the famous Flute intro in The Beatles’ Strawberry Fields).

Here‘s a little piece to welcome it to the studio after dreaming and searching for many years. It showcases the main sounds associated with that historic tape based sampling instrument: Flute, Violins and Cello."

Marius Leicht - Oddity 3 Improvisations

video upload by GForce Software

"in October 2022 we invited the supremely talented Marius Leicht to our studio to record a couple of iconic vintage synthesisers for his forthcoming project.

These sessions took place over several days (and nights) and when finished, we asked him to improvise with some Oddity 3 patches prior to its release. This was the first time Marius had seen or played Oddity 3 and any slider adjustments made on the keyboard controlled the new Macros feature.

Marius Leicht - Der Prophet (live in studio)

video uploads by Marius Leicht

Playlist:

1. Marius Leicht - Der Prophet (live in studio)
This is a live performance of the piece "Der Prophet" from my recently finished debut album "Weltmaschine", coming out on 21.06.2021.
2. Maria durch ein Dornwald ging - Synth Jam
3. Klangteppich [music] - Prophet 5 and Strymon Mobius
Prophet 5 running through Strymon Mobius. First with a Bitcrusher, controlled by the Moog MP-201 pedal. Later with the Formant filter doing the robotalk.
4. Klangteppich - Marc Melià: Arpeggios #1 (Music for Prophet 08 - played on Prophet 5)
As I stumbled across this great composition by Marc Melià, I decided transcribe it and to do a vintage version with the ancestors of the machines used in the original: Prophet 5 and Roland Space Echo.

Recorded at Weltklang Tonstudio Plauen
5. Theremin and Synths with Carolina Eyck
I was a guest recently at Theremin virtuoso Carolina Eycks Theremin session. Along with a cover of Kate Bushs Babooshka we did some free improvisations.

GForce Software OB-E vs. Oberheim SEM Pro - Nachtblau

video upload by Marius Leicht

"The sound is alternating between the OB-E and the SEM-Pro. In the bottom left corner of the video the letters A and B are displaying the audio of which corresponding synth you hear, regardless of which one may be pictured in the video at a given moment. Can you guess it right?

The Oberheim Four Voice Synthesizer always fascinated me - both for its heart-melting sound and for its unusual (for todays standards) concept of having a completely distinct monophonic synthesizer module for each voice.

From time to time I take the effort to build some Four Voice type pad sounds by multitracking my Tom Oberheim SEM Pro, which is a reissue of one of those monophonic synthesizer modules the Four Voice is built of.

Of course, I was excited when I heard about the GForce Software OB-E and as soon as I got my hands on it, I was inspired to compose some music with it, resulting in this piece called "Nachtblau". To make this comparison video, I took the MIDI track of the piece, split all the notes into 8 Channels (Yes, the OB-E is not only emulating the already unobtainable Four Voice, but the even more rare and expensive 8 Voice, consisting of 8 individual SEMs) and run them through my SEM Pro one after another. Due to the nature of the unconventional architecture and my multitrack trickery, it was impossible to be reasonably precise about the matching of the sounds and realtime adjustments. So don't take this as a scientific test on the question if the OB-E can match the sound of the 8-Voice I don't even have at hand..."

Prophet Vs Prophet - The Blind Test!

video by Alex Ball

Update: results posted here.

"A comparison between a vintage Prophet~5 rev3 and a new Prophet~10 rev4 (both designed by Dave Smith at Sequential).

This is a blind test where you see the same clip twice, but in one you're hearing the Prophet you see and in the other you're hearing the Prophet you don't see.

Write which you think is which for each of the 9 examples in the comments and I'll reveal the correct answers and the results of people's responses in a weeks time.

Huge thank you to Marius Leicht for his help with this video:
